Selecting a Rug

Selecting a Rug

An area rug is an essential part of a well-designed room that provides comfort and style! It is often an investment piece and I have seen it paralyze homeowners! Keep reading for a few tips that I use to select the right rug!

One of the most common mistakes I see is that people choose rugs that are too small for their space. For a living room, at least the front two legs of the furniture, if not all of the legs, need to be on the rug. You also need to allow about 8” on the sides. Generally for an average living room a 9×12 rug or larger is best.

For a dining room, you want to be sure that all of the chair legs fit on the rug with an additional 8-12” of rug on each side.

For a bedroom, the rug should run in the opposite direction of the bed and lay 6-8” away from the bedside tables.

Make it stand out

If my client doesn’t have a particular starting point for the room we’re working on, I often recommend we start with the rug. A colorful rug that you love can set the tone and color palette for the whole space.

Regardless of your choice of a colorful or more subtle toned rug, a memory foam pad protects your floors, and the life of the rug and makes it more cozy!
