A coffee table may not seem important, but it is a grounding piece of furniture for any living space. Sometimes a sofa or sectional can feel like it’s floating in the space and a coffee table is just what you need to communicate that this is a comfortable space to hang out in!
We all have different criteria to look for in a coffee table. Round is often appealing for families because it feels less angular for babies and young children to hurt themselves on. I encourage my clients to look for coffee tables that are 1/2 to 3/5 the distance between the arms of your sofa. This way it looks substantial enough and most people can reach easily to put a drink down on it. Consider if you (or your family members) will put their feet on it? Are they less than faithful coaster users under their drinks? Will art projects and games happen here? If you’ve answered yes to any of these, I’d consider a stone top or metal coffee table for durability!
