My client moved to Asheville with two beds and not much else. He'd bought a four-bedroom house and knew he wanted it to feel stylish, modern, and masculine — a comfortable home for him and his dog Allie. Beyond that, he was pretty open. The one thing he was clear about was wanting an incredibly comfortable place to watch movies. He came from a small condo, so furnishing a home with a living room, media room, dining room, four bedrooms, and a spa was whole new territory.
Beneath the practical wish list, what he really wanted was a home that felt like him. Masculine and moody – he wasn't afraid of dark colors and had a natural ease with rich neutrals. What emerged through the concept phase was a clear through line: cozy, enveloping spaces with plush rugs, soft fabrics, and clean lines that kept everything feeling intentional rather than heavy.
We started where it made the most sense — the primary bedroom, a guest room, and his office. The fourth bedroom sat empty for a while, on purpose. I didn't want to furnish it without giving it a reason to exist. Then one day I got an email that changed everything: "I bought four slot machines. Let's make a casino room." Just like that, the fourth bedroom had its purpose.

The project was almost the whole home: a formal living room, dining room, primary bedroom, and powder room upstairs — and a media room, office, and guest bedroom downstairs. Then the surprise.
I learned quickly that this project would be about texture more than pattern. We layered chenilles and velvets that make you want to sink in and stay — perfect for a client whose main design requirement was a room built for watching movies all day. He's also a minimalist at heart, so wallpaper became a go-to move: a way to add richness and interest without adding clutter.
The casino room was where things got truly fun. We wanted to capture the feeling of a casino in an elevated way — intimate, playful, and just a little indulgent. The walls are painted a warm dark gray, with a cork ceiling wallpaper subtly flecked with gold for a low shimmer that nods to glamour without tipping into theme. Custom built stands elevate the slot machines, upgraded lighting keeps the mood dim and dramatic, and a plush striated rug grounds the space underfoot. A bartop table on a solid marble orb base anchors the lounge area, paired with swivel counter stools and a generous chair and a half. Original art by Stephen Steinberg and an antiqued convex mirror bring it all together — a room designed for friendly bets, late nights, and good stories.
